When I hit the road seven months ago it was a sudden decision. Ducking out on a year lease, leaving an off white tower of domestic “necessities” in the free pile near the mailboxes where I had never received anything but bills, stuffing the rest into a Subaru that groaned under the weight, and that was it.
And though I was unsure of nearly everything at the time one goal was clear: I wanted to document the experience. Something mainly for my future self to look back on, smile, and shake my head at how reckless and free I once was.
What emerged was the idea for the “5,000 Miles Project” and after 5 months of shooting, re-shooting, last minute sends, scrapped footage, hours of editing, car trouble, endless self doubt, epic approaches, and a monomania comparable to Ahab himself the Project has finally come to fruition.
The experience of making this series was unlike any other production I have been involved in. I was right in the thick of it, unsure of what I was even looking for, and nervous about what I could accomplish. In the end I don’t think I could have done anything differently and though such an organic style of film making can be stressful it was the epitome of what life on the road is. Free.
I hope you enjoy this series and I thank you for taking the time to watch.
See you out there,
Max
