We approach everything with intention
Comprehensive research in system construction and material sourcing is fundamental to the elements we use and how we construct a complete Flashed padding product. Whether for route or boulder areas, the foam selected, how we lay it out, layer it, or bond it, all this comes from our testing and experience, having installed hundreds of thousands of square feet of padding.
Our paneled approach is key to the top of any system (carpet-bonded foam, in route areas, or a vinyl, Cordura, or composite cover in boulder areas). In bouldering padding, in particular, our tried and true approach is different from all our competitors. We believe how we bring together all the components of padding results in the best product for climbers in your facility, and if you climb over and land on a Flashed system, we believe you will think so too.
Foam Options
With hundreds of foam grades available for bouldering padding, our design group applied the knowledge gained from our proprietary testing equipment to simplify the process and offer two paths: PU + Memory or PU foam only.
PU + Memory
This is the highest-performing foam combination on the market. Memory foam bonded into our system has benefits easy to see and feel. Due to its nature, energy restitution (returned energy or “rebound”) is minimized with memory foam, significantly increasing impact attenuation. You sink into a fall rather than hit hard or bounce, and therefore dissipating the impacting energy. Exactly what you want when falling off a wall.
PU Foam Only
This is our core foam system for the best value. You get all the benefits of a thoroughly researched foam composition in a cost-effective product that sets our original standards for minimizing g-force impact. Bonded together are different foam layers of different densities and overlapped to create a soft catch without a single foam slab recoil.
There is so much we love about foam. There simply isn’t room to have it all here. The concepts of density, compression, layers, and work together for performance, durability, and cost are quite complex. Having a good understanding of this and having worked with countless unique gyms to create the best systems allows us the knowledge to fine-tune your gym padding and target your goals with precision. If you want to dive deeper into a foam conversation, then we’d love to talk with you!
Cover Options
What are the best pads out there? Simple, the ones you like the most, and your unique preference is important when it comes to bouldering covers. Don’t feel like you need to take something from an off-the-shelf catalog. Instead, please work with us to help you consider what’s right for your climbers and demand that the products cater to that. As a starting place, we have 3 principal cover types for bouldering based on common gym themes.
Vinyl
This was the first product used in a uniform, non-modular system. It boasts the most hygienic benefits due to its impermeability and doesn’t soak or hold any liquids. Although vinyl has a reputation for cracking and peeling over time, our vinyl has been specifically developed to combat this to give you years of incredible performance and use. Our 22oz stretch vinyl will outperform and outlast our competitors.
At Flashed, the key is to use the right tool for the right job. Though there are thicker covers, a heavier vinyl doesn’t make for a better landing, and it may crack and peel just as much over time. Instead, through our research, we came to use our specific stretch vinyl and plastic compound to combat the cracking and peeling problem directly because simply grabbing a bigger hammer isn’t our style.
1000d Nylon Cordura
This material has been used in heavy-duty applications for its abrasion and tensile strengths for decades. With a polyurethane backing and savage delight for harsh conditions, this Cordura is like the bamboo tree during a hurricane. It just rolls with the punches and then gets up, ready to take more. We have padding systems over 7 years old that are still using the original 1000d nylon in facilities, among the busiest in the nation. Nothing speaks louder than proof of experience.
Carpet Composite
Often innovation is bred from necessity. Looking down the road and estimating where the industry is going is one of our strengths. Although people were happy with vinyl and Cordura, we wanted to bring a new experience to the gym customer. The result was the industry’s first carpet bouldering pads that then, and still are, far more than a layer of carpet put on top. Ever since then, we’ve been refining and evolving our Carpet Composite, and now this innovative and burly carpet system is the leading preferred bouldering cover!
We use a vinyl base to gain all the benefits of hygiene and steam cleaning and laminate it directly onto a rugged non-woven carpet with a special backing to give unparalleled feel, support, ease of maintenance, cleanability, and performance. Just as the modern gym has evolved to offer beautiful atmospheres and services, this product keeps pace with increased traffic and demands while delivering an experience that climbers will note.
